Study in the UK from Iraq

UK universities are autonomous and set their own admissions. The whole system is English-medium. Levels run from undergraduate bachelor's degrees to taught and research master's and PhDs.

The defining features for international applicants are the offer system (conditional/unconditional), the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) that a licensed university issues, and the points-based Student visa that depends on it.

Undergraduate entry is based on your secondary qualifications and is usually managed through UCAS. Taught master's entry requires a relevant bachelor's and is usually applied for directly. PhD entry usually involves a research proposal and a supervisor.

All UK programmes are taught in English, so you will normally need an approved English test (such as an IELTS for UKVI) unless you qualify for an exemption. Each university sets the score it requires for your programme.

   Undergraduate applicants apply through UCAS; postgraduate applicants usually apply on the university's own site. Include your personal statement and references.

   Use the CAS and your financial and English evidence to apply for the Student visa, then enrol at the university.

Admission (the university's offer and CAS) and the Student visa (decided by UK immigration) are distinct. The CAS is a bridge between them, but holding a CAS is not the same as holding a visa — you still meet the visa's financial and other requirements separately.

Tuition is set by each university and programme, and international fees differ from UK 'home' fees. Confirm the current fee on the official programme page, and check whether a deposit is required to hold your place.

The main intake is the autumn (September/October); some universities also offer a January intake for selected programmes. Application timing for competitive courses can be much earlier — check UCAS and the university.

Living costs vary widely, with London higher than most other cities. The Student visa uses set living-cost figures that differ by location — check the current amounts on GOV.UK.

The Student visa requires you to show tuition plus living costs, held for a set period before you apply, in an accepted form. The exact amount, holding period and evidence rules are set by UK immigration — confirm the current requirements on GOV.UK.

Study is via the points-based Student visa, which requires a CAS and financial evidence. A post-study work route (the Graduate Route) has existed for eligible graduates — confirm the current terms on GOV.UK, as immigration rules change.

• Prepare transcripts, certificates and an approved English test early — the CAS and visa timeline is tight and depends on them.
• Budget for a tuition deposit, which many universities require before issuing a CAS.

Can Iraqi students study in the UK?

Yes. Iraqi students can apply to UK universities, usually through UCAS for undergraduate study and directly for postgraduate study. After accepting an offer and meeting conditions you receive a CAS to apply for the Student visa.

What is a CAS?

A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is a reference number a licensed UK university issues after you accept and meet the conditions of your offer. You need it to apply for the Student visa; it is not itself a visa.

Is a UK offer the same as a visa?

No. A university offer and CAS come from the university; the Student visa is decided by UK immigration based on separate financial and other evidence. You must satisfy both.
